Wind, rain & snow - can your steel building take the strain?

Weather conditions can have a significant impact on buildings and can cause significant structural damage. It is well known that snow can result in roof collapse, but wind can also result in damage, including wall collapse and damage to cladding.

For this reason steel buildings in the UK are designed to BS6399 (Eurocode EN1993-1-3:2006).  It is essential that your building is designed to withstand the weather conditions of your site to take into account extremes in exposure.

Loading plays a crucial part in steel building design. There are two types of load to be taken into account: the dead load which is based on the weight of the materials used; and the imposed load which takes account of the location of the building, the height above sea level, the load imposed by snow and the effects of drifting, etc.

A map detailing typical wind speeds based on geographical location is used to determine the ‘fundamental basic wind velocity’ which varies across the UK.  Other factors are also taken into account including :-

• specific features of the building, including the height
• the location and surroundings of the building
• The altitude of the building site
• the type of terrain & landscape
• the proximity of other buildings
• and the distance from the sea.

It is important that your building is designed for your specific site in accordance with these factors.  Cutting corners can cost lives.
