Maintaining your Steel Frame Building

Steel framed buildings require regular maintenance but generally need less than traditional brick or wooden buildings.

Miracle Span's cold rolled steel buildings are designed to British Standards and to your specific site conditions and can withstand charted weather conditions of your site and by taking account
of loadings imposed on the building by heavy winds and snow.
As with any structure, it is recommended that you carry out visual inspections on
a routine basis and particularly following severe weather events.

Regular cleaning of your building is recommended:-

The steel frame should be brushed down periodically with a soft brush, taking care not
to scratch the steel coating, to prevent any build up of dust and dirt.
Profiled cladding sheets should be cleaned at yearly intervals using a soft brush or
mop and mild soap and water. Care must be taken to ensure brushing does not harm
any surface and abrasive cleaning materials should not be used.

Profile sheets should be inspected immediately after cleaning for damage
or deterioration of coatings. Any small areas of rust or damaged paint should
be cleaned back to remove any loose coatings or traces of rust. The damaged area should
be treated with a suitable undercoat then over painted with a matching paint. If large areas of
the sheets have deteriorated the recommendation would be to replace rather than repair.

Gutters should be cleaned annually with a soft cloth and simple detergent to keep the PVC in
good condition. Stubborn stains can be removed with white spirit applied
with a cloth. Any build-up of fallen leaves or debris should be removed from rainwater
systems on a regular basis.
Scratches should be repaired by applying touch up paint to the affected area care being
taken not to treat a larger area than absolutely necessary as touch up paint may
oxidise at a different rate to rest of the sheet.

General Notes :-

• Repairs to damage or deterioration of coatings should be carried out within 2 working weeks of
  inspection.
• Inspections, cleaning, painting and repairing should be recorded for future reference.
